What Is Urine pH?
The meaning of urine pH, its normal range, causes of acidic and alkaline urine, the relationship with kidney stone types, and the concept of urinary alkalinisation.
What pH shows
pH expresses how acidic or basic a liquid is on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 considered neutral. Urine pH reflects how the body manages its acid-base balance as well as dietary habits, and it is measured with a simple urinalysis.
- Typical range
- Between 4.5 and 8.0
- Common average
- Around 6, slightly acidic
- Measurement
- Urinalysis
- Relevance
- Certain stone types are directly pH-related
The normal range
Urine pH fluctuates during the day; values between 4.5 and 8.0 are not, by themselves, a sign of disease. Morning urine tends to be more acidic and values rise after meals. The pattern across repeated measurements is more meaningful than a single reading, and interpretation belongs to the physician.
What acidic urine means
Persistently low pH may be associated with a diet rich in animal protein, certain metabolic conditions and low fluid intake. Persistently acidic urine predisposes to uric acid stones, a special group that can dissolve when urine pH is raised.
What alkaline urine means
High pH may be associated with a vegetable-rich diet, certain kidney conditions and, notably, urinary tract infections caused by urea-splitting bacteria. Persistently alkaline urine on a background of infection favours struvite stone formation, so alkaline urine together with infection symptoms calls for medical assessment.
What urinary alkalinisation is
Urinary alkalinisation means raising urine pH to a defined target range under physician supervision. Dissolving uric acid stones and preventing certain stone types are its main uses. The mechanism of citrate, one of the principal urinary alkalinising substances, is described on our potassium citrate page. Alkalinisation is not a self-administered practice; the target range and monitoring are set by the physician.

Frequently asked questions
What does high urine pH mean?
On its own it is not a sign of disease and may reflect diet. Combined with infection symptoms, or persistently high across repeated tests, it requires medical assessment.
What causes acidic urine?
A diet rich in animal protein, low fluid intake and certain metabolic conditions acidify urine. Persistently acidic urine can predispose to uric acid stones.
How is urine pH raised?
Whether it is necessary, and how, is decided by the physician. Dietary adjustment and treatments the physician considers appropriate bring pH into the target range; self-treatment is not recommended.
Does urine pH affect kidney stones?
Yes. Uric acid stones tend to form in acidic urine and struvite stones in alkaline urine, so the pH target depends on the stone type and is monitored by the physician.
