How uroflowmetry is performed
The person urinates into a device that records volume over time and displays the flow pattern. Voided volume affects interpretation, so the clinic’s preparation instructions matter. Straining or changing usual behaviour to produce a better result can make the measurement less representative. [1]
What a low flow rate means
Low flow can occur with an obstruction, but weak bladder muscle contraction or a small voided volume can also affect the result. Low flow alone therefore does not prove an obstruction caused by the prostate. A repeat measurement may sometimes be useful. [1]
Assessing residual urine
Urine remaining after voiding is usually measured with ultrasound. An elevated value may indicate incomplete emptying but does not, by itself, identify the cause. Measurement conditions and changes over time are considered alongside the value. [1, 2]
Does prostate size explain everything?
The size of the prostate and the severity of symptoms do not always correspond. Flow, residual urine, symptoms, examination and other findings are reviewed together. A prostate volume or flow value on a report cannot independently determine whether surgery is needed. [2]
Discussing the result
Tell the team if the test felt unusual or differed from normal urination. Ask how the findings relate to everyday symptoms, whether repetition is needed and what the next review should clarify. Complete inability to pass urine, particularly with painful bladder fullness, requires urgent assessment. [2]
